UPDATE: Wood Lake Wildfire

As per message from Boyd Peters, Rights & Title Manager:

"The latest update on the Wood Lake fire is attached for your easy reference. Although there is a distinct smoke smell today due to air inversion there are no Air Quality Advisory’s issued at this time.  Be cautious if you have breathing problems such as Asthma.

The Wood Lake campsite was inspected to assess the damage (see attached photo). As you know, this is very near where the fire was started. Generally the fire burned around the campground and in many cases right up to the edge of the campsites. No structures or tables were burnt. The fire crews did an amazing job of installing sprinklers in all the perimeter campsites.

The fire crews are doing an admirable job. The fire has not reached Stepsum (20 Mile Bay campsite). The fire is approximately 10 km’s south.  Hemlock Valley Ski Resort is unaffected. Once we have a map of the fire perimeter we will post it. The south end of the fire is looking good and quiet. The fire crews have fire hose 50-100 feet in at these locations. So we are safe on Reserve.

Once it is safe to do so we will assess damage, if any to 10 Mile Bay (Quqwathem), Eagle Falls (Kwótxwem), and other cultural spiritual sites we have. Further analysis will be done for important area’s we have for plant gathering, hunting, fishing, and ceremonial purposes. There are no significant updates on wildlife being harmed, especially the Elk.

If there are any significant changes in fire behaviour or Air Quality we will keep you posted. Depending on the weather it is expected that this fire will last up to three weeks."
